Whenever we need to estimate the quantity of building materials for concrete work or for the estimation of cement mortar quantity for plastering work and brick work, knowing the volume of a cement bag is an important criteria as evident from my previous articles on material quantity calculation.
By knowing the volume per cement bag, we can calculate the total number of cement bags required.
Calculating the volume of a 50kg cement bag is not a rocket science at all. You just need to know the unit weight of cement i.e, the density of cement when it is in loose state plus the mass-volume relationship which we are going to use in this calculation.Now let's illustrate this with the help of an example in which we will consider a cement bag of mass 50kg.Given data:
Mass of 1 bag of cement = 50kg
Density of cement in loose state = 1440kg/m
Volume of cement bag in m³:
Using the mass-volume relationship,
i.e, Volume = Mass/Density
Volume = 50/1440 = 0.0347m³
Hence the volume of 1 bag of cement in m³ = 0.0347m³
Volume of cement bag in Cft:
Volume of 1 bag of cement in cubic feet will be calculated by multiplying the volume in m³ by 35.314.
Hence, volume of cement bag in cubic feet = 0.0347 x 35.314 = 1.225 ~ 1.25Cft
Volume of cement bag in litres:
Also the volume of a cement bag in litres is calculated by multiplying the volume in m³ by 1000.
Hence volume of cement bag in litres = 0.0347 x 1000 = 34.722~35litres.
